GUYANA’S Defence Board considered the increase in serious gun-related crimes at its last meeting.
And Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon reported that there has been a five percent increase in this area, year to date, compared to 2012.
At Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, he charged that the Opposition’s “posturing” and rejection of efforts by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, in the area of law enforcement, crime fighting and national security, exposes innocent Guyanese to “emboldened” criminals.
The HPS said the Opposition’s posturing on this issue presents Guyana with a ‘Catch 22’ situation.
Luncheon acknowledged too that other factors related to gun-crime control include the right to bear arms and the processes of the criminal justice system.
When asked, he confirmed the illegal importation of guns at different ports of entry and maintained that the focus in tackling this problem rests with additional resources at those ports and improved efficacy of current efforts.
