ONE suspect remained in police custody yesterday as investigations continued into the execution-style killing of policeman, Michael Cumberbatch last Monday night.
The man still in detention was arrested the same night of the shooting at the victim’s home and an identification parade was held yesterday, at which the dead man’s wife made an appearance, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said.
Police Constable Cumberbatch, who had been attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU, was shot and killed about 20:40 hrs, in North Sophia Squatting Area, by a shooter with a handgun.
Investigators reported that Cumberbatch was at his residence when he was confronted by the perpetrator enquiring about one ‘Quacy’. An argument arose between the enquirer and Cumberbatch and he was shot to his chest by the former who escaped.
The injured cop was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Initially, two suspects were arrested.
Meanwhile, Orlando Cumberbatch revealed, yesterday, that contact has been made with his brother’s wife, Lillian Cumberbatch and she is also assisting the police with vital information.
HER HELP
He said her help led to the arrest of a man who is suspected to be the shooter.
According to him, the relatives are in receipt of some new details which they have related to the police.
They said Cumberbatch had been in Cooper Street, Albouystown, visiting the girlfriend of one of his friends the night of his demise.
He had been seeing the woman previously but her fiancé, who is a close friend, disapproved of the relationship and had discouraged it but the policeman continued to meet her.
Because of that and a hand written note found in his motor car and turned over to detectives, it is now believed that his death was the result of a ‘hired hit’, relatives stated.
Initially, they had a suspicion that Cumberbatch’s wife was involved in his murder but, after a conversation with her, she explained that she moved from their Sophia house out of fear.
The father of two, Cumberbatch, 29, of Lot 111 North Sophia, was in the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for 13 years.
He suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the neck and the other to the chest after he had ordered a man, making an enquiry for another named person, to leave his yard.
