AN eighty-eight-year-old, bedridden pensioner  met a fiery death at Islington Village , Greater New Amsterdam, shortly after 19:00hrs  last evening.

Pastor Ryan Manpowan of the Overwinning Bible Church was having  his usual exercise when he heard shouts of ‘fire ‘.
“I  saw the building engulfed in flames and  her sister, Olive London   was underneath the house, so I lifted her away from the building . Other persons attempted to gain entry through the front door to save the other sister, Margaret , but were unsuccessful, as the heat was too much’.
“Margaret  had celebrated her 88th birthday last Sunday when members of the church held a thanksgiving service for her.
Meanwhile , Olive London, 93, was overheard saying , ‘ Jesus , Jesus  O my sister, O my sister ‘.
The widow lamented  the loss of her sister who suffered a stroke and was paralysed.
Speaking to this reporter, London said she had lit the lamp and was taking tea to her sister in the front bedroom when she observed her  bedroom, which is at the back of the building, on fire .
‘I got a bucket ,, and threw some water, but it did not go out, it started to spread . I then went outside when they rescued me ‘.
The sisters live alone, but would be visited by relatives and friends . They are survived by two siblings, both in their eighties .
Meanwhile , ranks from the fire service  lamented the failure of the police to control the crowd  which often times  hindered them. Nevertheless , they managed to save a building just five feet away.
