High time we awake from our slumber

IT’s an all-too-familiar sight, that is, the size, character and racial composition of the murderous horde when caught. The location of these persons – the lowest of the low – is also of significance. They all hail from Region 4, the “thieving” capital of our beloved country.” Then there is the theatrical display of the mobster crowd and the facilitating mother of one of the accused shouting and wailing then falling in an unconscious heap “meh son innocent …  they got the wrong man.”
You cannot tell me after the police was

just out from a hot confrontation with your bandit son you can still have the vulgar indecency to say wrong man!
Then I’d be damned, nobody in Guyana is a bandit every last one of them is a saint. How many times haven’t you heard “the wrong man  … the boy is innocent” story I would sarcastically say “a million times.” It’s an all familiar story that has not lost its appeal when it comes to a Region 4 thieving murderous mob. These occurrences are too numerous to mention.

The next logical thing to do is to get a high-priced attorney who would in turn wheel and deal with the juror/s to get the accused freed. Or he can so distort the facts that his client gets little or no time. Soon after their release they will then go purchase an expensive vehicle to eagerly bask in blood money. Well, the reality of the whole situation is that vehicle is not going to bring in the big bucks fast enough, because bandits do not like to work hard and sweat and earn an honest living is an abhorrence. The preferred option is to forcefully take what someone else has. It is easy pickings, so, back to their thieving ways. Make no mistake dear readers-persons with  thieving, murderous talent will strike again. More often than not, they will go on another criminal rampage, seeking out a wealthy businessman, shoot and rob him and make good their escape. And the criminal cycle goes on.
Already the name of a certain high-priced attorney makes headline news; his rich influential empire built from criminal proceeds. This is the situation in Guyana today – beautiful Guyana!
This is the motivational spirit that drives them on to do the crime and not the time, because they have a big bully in legal circles who “can get them off easily.” Well, I have news for them: it might not be so easy this time; they are going down into a cell for a very long time never to see the light of freedom again.
So, they are planning their defence, around the age-old theory of police brutality along with the worn-out testimony of, “I was beaten into making a confession statement.”
These so-called acts of torture have long been a sore point in our courts and it has led to the acquittal of many a criminal. In my scheme of things, torture or what I would term force used by lawmen is considered legit when administered to a criminal who was in a violent confrontation with the police. Law Enforcement is duty bound to use force over and above force used by the criminal enough to bring him down should this be necessary.  You are not talking about Sunday school choir boys coming from mass here, but of hardened criminals who are prepared to use every violent means at their disposal to get the police before they can get them. They are not going to surrender without a violent struggle, so if the bandit gets injured in the ensuing confrontation, who cares. And speaking of the passing of blood which is the excuse coming from the attorney of one of the accused,  I can quote an incident  that took place in New Amsterdam some years ago when the felon’s injury was self inflicted. In that incident he used a sharpened object to mutilate himself in the genital area to make it appear that he was beaten by the police. It was only the expert advice of a doctor who later testified that the criminal’s injuries could have been self inflicted that led to the officers being exonerated. But we need not look very far when it comes to the subjugation of a felon after witnessing that violent display by one of the accused last week. He had to be forcefully brought down, not by the attending officers, who by the way were no match for the felon but was subdued only when reinforcements were called in. It tells you how strong and violent a criminal is and if that could have been his display in full public view, then there is nothing left to the imagination what this guy is capable of when he’s out of the searching glare of a camera.
The point is, criminals must be brought to justice and this means that brutal measures might have to be taken.
Finally, we cannot allow criminals and their associates to outsmart us. It is high time we awake out of our slumber and realise that we need to put a stop to violent crime.
