THE ORGANISERS of the inaugural Troy Cook Memorial Football tournament, which is being sponsored by Ansa McAl’s Stag Beer and was scheduled to kick off this evening at the Camptown Football Club ground in Campbellville, were forced to push back the start of the tournament.
Chronicle Sport was reliably informed by an anonymous source, that even though the organisers sought and received confirmation from the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) to host the tournament, that body’s edition of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Premier League Play-offs is still to be completed, with some of the teams participating in that said tournament.
Hence, the eight teams, who will be competing in the Troy Cook Memorial for the top prize of $500 000, have been given notice of the delayed start, which is being done to facilitate the culmination of the GFA’s leg of the Premier League Play-offs.
With that in mind, the Troy Cook Memorial Football Tournament which was launched last Monday is expected to kick off one week from today, once the necessary approval is confirmed by the GFA, with the fixtures remaining the same.
Georgetown Football Club and Fruta Conquerors will meet in the opening encounter, followed by the Santos versus Pele matchup on the first day, while the second-day action will see Western Tigers do battle with Camptown in the first match and Alpha United against Guyana Defence Force in the second.
The winners of the four matches will meet in the semifinals on the third day of action, while the third-place playoff and final will culminate things on the fourth and final day.
Riddim Squad have been named as the alternate team to compete, should one of the abovementioned teams withdraw and while there is a general admission fee of $500, patrons who turn up at the venue with a dominant colour for one of the four teams who will be competing on the said night, will be given a $200 reduction on their admission fee.
