Karasabai ready for influx of visitors for Heritage Day celebrations

ALL roads lead to Karasabai village in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains of Region 9 today, as the programme for Amerindian Heritage Month 2013 continues.

Karasabai is the designated Heritage Village for this year’s celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month, and the celebrations include a packed programme of song, dance, competitions, athletic events, mouthwatering dishes, indigenous wines and beverages, and the unique culture of the Makushi tribe which lives there.
Secretary of the North Rupununi District Development Board, Mr. Virgil Harding, disclosed yesterday that the villagers were abustle with preparations for welcoming visitors and ensuring that those enjoy the hospitality of the community.

He also said that delegations from neighbouring North Rupununi villages have begun mobilizing for the journey to Karasabai to participate in the sports and cultural programme, exhibition of food and produce, and other highlights of the big event.
Harding said all preparations have been completed for a fun-filled day at Karasabai.
Visitors from the coastland are expected to travel to the village via the Wismar-Lethem road which, although a fair weather road and currently “somewhat rough”, is usable, Harding said.
Heritage Village celebrations are part of the month-long observances that characterise Amerindian Heritage Month, and are one of the most highly anticipated events of the month, the organisers at the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs have said.
Micobie village, near Mahdia in Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni), hosted Heritage Village activities last year.
