Slingerz not taking Tigers lightly tonight

SLINGERZ Football Club would not be taking BK Western Tigers lightly when the two teams collide from 20:30hrs tonight in the second semifinal of the Slingerz/National Association of Women’s Football (NAWF) tournament at the GFC ground.
Slingerz’s coach and former national captain, Charles `Lily’ Pollard stated categorically that although the team have been reaping rewards over the past months they (Slingerz) would not be taking BK Western Tigers lightly tonight.

He said both teams have a good chance of qualifying for the final.
According to Pollard, the team’s fitness level is good but not at the level where it should be for tonight’s game.

He said while he is satisfied with the players’ level of fitness, the players still have a far way to go in this area.
The West Demerara-based team with a number of players from Linden advanced to tonight’s semifinal by drubbing Linden’s Net Rockers 4-0 in a first round fixture then brushed aside another Linden team, Topp XX by a 4-1 margin in a quarter-final match.
BK Western Tigers on the other hand needled Seawall United 2-1 in a first round game then edged Pele 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the two teams were locked 0-0 at the end of regulation and full time.
The Slingerz starting team would be spearheaded by the captain Dwayne Jacobs at midfield, and he will be expecting support from Devon Millington on the strike line Vernon Mills, Clive Nobrega and Kester Jacobs in midfield.
The team’s defence would include Colin Nelson and Joshua Brown while 16-year old Simon Emmanuel would be doing duty between the uprights.
Millington was the in-form goal-hungry player last Friday night when Slingerz registered the 4-1 victory over Topp XX. He scored all four goals for the West Demerara side.
BK Western Tigers will pin their hopes on their captain Phillip Rowley as well as Gavin Wilson, Solomon Austin, Jerome Richardson, Shermon David, Leroy Pedro, Randolph Wagner, Dorwin Benjamin, Stellon Davis and custodian Deryck Carter.
Prior to the Slingerz/Tigers game, Georgetown women will face their counterparts from Berbice in the women’s semifinal which is scheduled to blow off at 18:30hrs.
The winner of the women’s semifinal will meet Bartica women in the final set for September 1 at either the GCC ground or Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
Likewise, the winner of the men’s semifinal will meet Alpha `The Hammer’ United in the final also on Sunday.
The third place play-off will be staged on Friday at the GFC ground and will involve the two losing sides from tonight’s fixtures and West Demerara (women) and Camptown (men).
Meanwhile, the tournament organisers yesterday received their sponsorship cheques from Terry Anderson, managing Director of Fazia’s Collection of Tuschen, West Coast Demerara and Pooran Bros Top Mix also of West Demerara.
