GUYANA’S new Junior Powerlifting World Champion Gumendra Shewdass returns home today following an emphatic triumph at the World Juniors and Sub-Juniors Men’s Championship which was held in Killeen, Texas, USA.
He became the top-ranked 53kg lifter in the World, claiming gold in the process on Monday after excelling in Deadlift.
Shewdass, who was accompanied by Denroy Livan, the manager, accumulated a total of 475kg (1045lb) to beat his closest rival Dalton La Coe of the USA into second place.
The eventual Champion was second after the completion of Bench Press and Squat where he climaxed at 90kg and 180kg, respectively.
However, he amassed a best lift of 205kg in the Deadlift to surpass La Coe and take the title. La Coe ended with a total of 452kg (Squat – 182.5kg; Bench Press – 105kg; Deadlift – 165kg).
Claiming the bronze medal was Russia’s Alexei Kulakov with a total of 437.5kg (Squat – 165kg; Bench Press – 97.5kg; Deadlift – 175kg).
Japan’s Tetsuharu Katsuta and Kazuma Arai, and Erick Aguilar of Ecuador were the other competitors in the 53kg category.
