City Council to organise roadside vendors to ease confusion

THE Mayor and City Council will be moving to have illegal roadside vendors do their selling in an organised manner to ease the confusion in Georgetown.

At a press conference yesterday at City Hall, acting Mayor Ranwell Jordan said that illegal vending has been a major issue for the longest while and “we can never remove vending from the city but we can organise it and that is what we intend to do.”
Over the weekend, the City Council and its team would have visited the Stabroek Market area and have “limit lines” drawn.
Jordan explained that this was necessary as some vendors took it upon themselves to place their stalls all over the place, causing mass confusion within the area.   Consequently, the City Council had re-drawn lines to indicate the limitations in vending areas.
He pointed out that vendors who had taken spots on the eastern side of the market have been removed and the council is strictly implementing rules to have no vending and no parking there. However, the exception will be trucks that have to deliver meat and goods to that section.
This new rule was enforced from yesterday as representatives from the City Council explained to the sellers the new stipulations.
Meanwhile, the vendors have appealed to the council to be allowed to vend after 5:00pm on a daily basis, and Jordan reported that this has been taken into consideration.
Jordan said further that wherever persons in the city vend they must be able to do so in strict compliance and follow a few simple rules which include keeping the area where they sell very clean. In addition, they must not impede pedestrians and block pavements, but vend in an orderly manner.
According to the acting mayor, this arrangement is necessary as removing the vendors would cause problems as most of them are single parents seeking  to make  livelihoods to give bread to their families on a daily basis.
