THE Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has named a five-member team to represent Guyana at the inaugural South American Youth Games set for Lima, Peru from September 9 to 29.
The names released by the federation were Akeem Arthur, Shaquel Agard, Stephano Husbands and the lone female Crystal Lambert while coach William Howard rounds out the five members.
These cyclists will compete in the BMX, Mountain Bike and Road racing categories.
Cycling is one of the seven disciplines Guyana will be participating in while the others are Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Boxing, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
Rounding out all the disciplines are Canoeing (Kayak), Fencing, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Rowing, Taekwondo, Lawn Tennis, Triathlon and Sailing.
There will be a total of 213 events (Men’s 109; Women’s 91; Mixed 13) to be contested between the 14 countries including Guyana.
The other countries are Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and hosts Peru.
The launching of the South-American Youth Games is part of the South American Sports Organisation (ODESUR) strategic planning, and seeks the development of sports throughout the region.
The initiative is aligned to the Youth Olympic Games and follows the same schedule of sports, age range and philosophy towards the strengthening of sport practice and the encouragement of culture and the promotion of ethics and education of the youth.
