SOROYA Simmons and Athena Gaskin yesterday got Guyana’s first silver medals as the Goodwill Swim Meet got down to final day of competition at the Aquatic Centre, Wildey, St. Michael, Barbados.
Simmons swam 1:11.45s in the girls’ 15 – 17 100m backstroke to add a silver to the two bronze medals she already won earlier at the three day competition.
Simmons moved two seconds up from the 1:13.17s seed time that she entered the race with, as did Gaskin who won silver in the 100m breaststroke of the same category in a time of 1:23.80s after entering seeded third with a time of 1:25.09s.
Simmons and Gaskin added Guyana’s seventh and eighth medal, after the team put together six bronze medals in the first two days of the competition. Simmons also has bronze in the 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke.
Gaskin won bronze in the 50m breaststroke.
Also with medals are Accalia Khan, who has two bronze medals, and Hannibal Gaskin, who has one bronze from his performance in the boys 15 – 17 200m freestyle.
Overall Guyana had 17 swimmers participating in the competition.
