DEONAUTH Singh, a 43-year-old driver attached to RK Security Service, was yesterday placed on a bond to keep the peace on a wounding charge.
Before Magistrate Ann McLennan, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence that on Sunday, August 11, at Quamina Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Albert Jeffrey.Police corporal Dinero Jones, prosecuting, told the court that on the day in question, at about 11:30 hrs, the virtual complainant (VC) and defendant, being tenants living in the same building at Quamina Street, the VC went to the defendant’s room to remove curtains which he had earlier lent the defendant. The defendant became annoyed, pulled a cutlass and dealt the VC a chop. The matter was reported to the police, and the VC went to seek medical attention.
But according to the defendant, the VC came into his apartment and started to burst down his blind, and he told him he would do what he has to do.
The VC said the defendant had picked up the cutlass and fired a chop at him.
Singh, in his defence, responded that if he had indeed chopped Jeffrey, Jeffrey would have been a dead man, and not standing in court today.
Jeffrey said that out of a clean heart, he loaned Singh several items, including pot, stove and curtain, but only recovered the curtain after the misunderstanding. He added that Singh had made report against him that he had been stealing electricity.
Singh then disclosed that he also loaned Jeffrey $1,800.
He added that he and Jeffrey are not friend, they just talk on a “hi and hello basis”.
Magistrate McLennan interjected that the relationship between the two of them had to be closer and not just on a “hi and hello basis”, since they are loaning stuff to each other.
Magistrate McLennan said, “You are two big men, and you need to desist from that, because you are too big and old to be fighting over curtains. That’s women’s issue, not men’s. Curtains are selling cheap, you can purchase for $2,000, at least $1,000 if you search around”.
After the magistrate had explained to the VC that the doctor’s report has stated that the wound he had received was merely a scratch which did not even bleed, Singh was reprimanded, and the charge against him was discharged; whilst both men were placed on a 12-month bond to keep the peace. The magistrate admonished them to learn to live like brothers.
