$16.9M and guns snatched from Toolsie Persaud clerks

The Police are investigating a daring daylight robbery on personnel of Toolsie Persaud Limited in the city.

In a press release last evening the police said that at around 13:00hrs yesterday, two Toolsie Persaud clerks, Jonathan Dookie, 21, and Dewan Chand, 57, were on their way to a city bank under armed escort in a motor vehicle, when it stopped at Sussex and Charles Street, Charlestown.

Here they were held up by a gunman who approached the vehicle and took away a bag containing some $16.9M, a .32 Taurus pistol and a .32 Taurus revolver, along with ammunition which were being carried by the clerks and security guards.

The gunman then ran from the scene and joined a waiting car in which he made good his escape.

The police consider it strange that the vehicle stopped at the spot where the gunman seemed to be waiting for them.
The police said, yesterday, that they continue to advise businessmen to seek their help when transferring large amounts of cash. Such pleas often fall on deaf ears since some business operators feel that they have their own adequate security arrangements in place.
Then there are those who would stick their cash underneath car seats and other parts of the vehicle; but for some strange reason, whenever they are cornered by gunmen, the bandits know exactly where to find the cash.
