THIRTY-nine-year-old labourer Louis Lancaster pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge which alleged that on Thursday, August 2, at Arapaima Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, he stole from Andre Persaud one pedal cycle valued $21,000.
“He is a friend of mine, and on that day we would normally cook some food, and I borrowed the bicycle and told him I’ll be back in 15 minutes to go to another location to get some provisions; and during that time, the bicycle was stolen from me because I didn’t have a chain or lock for it.” the father of two explained when given opportunity to address the court.
Based on his explanation, a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Asked by the magistrate where he resided, Lancaster claimed that he lives at Norton Street Georgetown, but he stays at the night shelter because of his circumstances – which were not elaborated on.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt objected to bail because the defendant had no fixed place of abode, and if granted his pre-trial freedom it was possible he would not return for trial.
Lancaster was remanded to prison, and will return to court on September 6.
