THE body of thirty-eight-year-old Gavin New Year was fished out from a weed-choked canal at Speculation Village, East Canje, after he apparently lost control of his motorcycle yesterday morning.
The discovery was made by his identical twin brother George, who felt that something had gone horribly wrong with his sibling after receiving a telephone call which had revealed that the Rose Hall Estate employee did not arrive home.
The now deceased GuySuCo employee of New Forest, East Canje, had worked the morning shift on Wednesday and had left the sugar factory at 16:00 hrs for his twin brother’s residence at Adelphi Village, about a mile away.
On arrival there, he assisted his sibling with some carpentry and picked genips intended for his three children before proceeding to have a few ‘drinks’. George New Year recalled that after imbibing his ‘drinks’, he told his brother not to ride the eight-mile journey home.
“I told him to sleep at my home. He did so. I left for work at the estate. I worked the 22:00 hrs to 08:00 hrs shift. During the morning [Thursday] at 06:30 hrs my sister Hazel telephoned to say that my brother had left for home. Hazel lived in front of my home. “Subsequently, several other calls came to my phone but initially I disregarded it. But I decided to answer the mobile phone, it was then that I learnt that my brother had not arrived home. I felt that something had gone horribly wrong with my brother.”
“As soon as eight o’clock arrived, I left Rose Hall factory on my motorcycle with two friends. We journeyed along the road looking for my brother. As I entered Speculation Village, I noticed a skid impression on the roadway. I saw my brother’s motorcycle, CF 1931, partially submerged in a canal. My brother’s body was pinned underneath.
“When I looked at my brother, I wondered what could have gone wrong. His clothing was all muddy. I wanted to clean him up as he does not carry himself in that way. But persons told me I have to leave him so until the police conclude their investigation.
“Imagine one night me left me brother and the next thing I know he gone,” George lamented.
The body is currently at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Gavin New Year is survived by his wife Shonette Taylor, children Melissa, Marcia and Gavin Junior, along with his parents, three sisters and his brother George.
