“This might be the last time you threaten anyone — be it man, woman or child,” the magistrate told Samuels after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Samuels allegedly committed the offence on Carletta Edwards on Friday, August 2, at Stelling View Area in Water Street, Georgetown.
Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court that on the day in question, at approximately 15:45 hrs, the virtual complainant was in the vicinity of Stelling View when there was a misunderstanding between herself and Samuels.
“I never hurt Carletta as long as I’ve been with her. On that day, I answered her phone and it was another man and I just felt betrayed and I lose it,” the defendant told the court.
When the magistrate asked Samuels if he had threatened Edwards, members of the court room groaned a soft harmonious ‘no’ when he replied that he had in his hand a solder bolt at the time.
Observing this, he added that he made no advances towards her, but instead went home to gather his things to move out when he was promptly arrested by the police and slapped with the current charge.
Based on his explanation, the magistrate entered a guilty plea to the charge. The defendant, in his final plea, asked the court for mercy, stating that he is a poor man and that he never meant to threaten Edwards; but the magistrate warned him, saying, “That may be so, but what your mind can conceive you can achieve.”
Edwards, in response, asked to have her evidence against Samuels withdrawn and suggested he be sent for counselling; but the magistrate mentioned it was unachievable, since they were unmarried.
Samuels was refused bail and has to return to court on September 5.
