Land of Canaan murder accused Kurleigh Goodluck freed by jury

A mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes yesterday returned a verdict of not guilty in favour of capital accused Kurleigh Goodluck, who had been on trial for the September 15, 2009 murder of Patrick Daley, committed at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.

Goodluck was represented by attorney-at-law, Peter Hugh.

State Prosecutrix, Miss Renita Singh had urged the jury to find that the accused was among persons who had attacked the deceased on the day in question, and she had urged the jury to find that the accused had prised open a bathroom door to get at the deceased, who was hit on the head by the accused and chopped by the others.

But in his address to the jury, Mr. Hugh referred to the doctor’s evidence, which showed that the deceased had died from shock and haemorrhage caused by multiple incised wounds. The doctor did not make reference to the head injury.

Following the jury’s verdict, presiding judge Madam Justice Dawn Gregory discharged the accused.
