Defendant in abuse and threatening language cases freed

THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Odessa Williams of Lot 32 James Street Albouystown, Georgetown appeared yesterday before Georgetown Magistrate, Ms. Judy Latchman charged with abusive language, threatening language and threatening behaviour committed on Friday, August 2, at Sussex Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.

Williams pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge that she used abusive language to Melissa Rogers, but pleaded not guilty to charges that she used threatening language and threatening behaviour to the said VC on the same day in question.

Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant picked up a bottle and threatened to burn the VC just like her husband had been burnt.

The VC told the court that “Odessa is a constant headache towards herself and her intended husband. On that day, she came over to our yard and created a scene because her scrap iron was missing.” The VC added that when the defendant picked up the bottle and chased behind her, to defend herself, she also picked up a shovel.

Rodgers’s intended husband, who was given an opportunity to speak, related that a similar incident had taken place at their home, where he was burnt. He said, “We know Odessa. She was our friend and she has an attitude problem. All we want is just a restraining order against her. Whenever someone (steals) scrap iron from her yard, she would normally come over and make a scene.”

Sergeant Hunt did not object to bail, but requested that both parties be placed on a bond pending the outcome of the matter.
After a short adjournment, the VC, also a scrap metal dealer indicated and gave sworn testimony that she would no longer proceed with the matter against Williams, because of her five children.

In light of the evidence given by Rogers, the prosecution was unable to proceed with the matter, and the defendant was set free by the magistrate.
