TO MANY in the cricketing fraternity, he is known as the ‘Super Cat’ while some remember him as the man who led the West Indies to back-to-back World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979, while later generating the West Indies dominance of world cricket. Clive Hubert Lloyd, who was born on August 31, 1944, has enjoyed a distinguished career in international cricket, where he played 110 Test matches for the West Indies, scored 7 515 runs inclusive of 19 centuries and 39 half-centuries at an average of 46.67 and a best of 242* against India.
These and other feats that were achieved by the 68-year-old Lloyd, including record-breaking successes were earned through a combination of personal and team efforts across communities in Guyana, the Caribbean and worldwide and landed him one of two Guyana Cultural Association 2013 Lifetime Achievement Awards, which he will receive at a gala ceremony on August 28 in New York.

Headley & Mellessa O. Headley, Marlon A. Jardine, Oonya Kempadoo, Michael Khan, Honourable Marty Markowitz, Metroplus Health Plan, Tony Ricardo, and Collin ‘Bumble’ Wharton.
According to Claire Ann Goring’s posting in the Guyana Cultural Association New York Inc., ‘Celebrating our heritage has been a joyous affair at all GuyFolk New York Festivals’.
“On each anniversary, the festivities fall under a theme relevant to Guyanese culture: we sing; we dance; we talk; we laugh; we look; we see; we eat; we drink and then we leave feeling good from the affirmation of our native traditions.”
According to a press release that was sent from the Guyana Cultural Association, Lloyd exhibited a blend of commendable leadership styles – inspirational, pacesetting and coaching that resulted in a remarkable legacy.
In addition to leading his teams of talented players he performed on par with many of his contemporaries in their respective positions as batsmen and fielders. It all aggregates to a hallmark of excellence that will serve as model for a long time and Guyanese in all walks of life are proud of his accomplishments.
Asked to make brief comments on his recent achievements, Lloyd said “It is a great honour to know that my services are being recognised and you feel proud to be receiving this award from such a prestigious organisation which is helping to keep Guyana on the international map.”
At present, he is the Brand Ambassador for Limacol, the proud title sponsor of the inaugural Caribbean Premier League, which was renamed the Limacol Caribbean Premier League that is currently being contested by six franchise teams.
