MEDICAL personnel from the Overseas Medical Assistance Team (OMAT), headed by Mackenzie-born surgeon Dr. Stephen Carryl, are continuing a six-day clinic in Linden. Led by Carryl, who is Chairman of Surgery at the Wyckoff Heights Hospital Centre in Brooklyn, New York, they are seeing patients at the Linden Hospital Complex, where surgeries are also being done and prescriptions written.
In addition, the President of OMAT said there was a health fair and a lecture for nurses in the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN) building on Republic Avenue, Mackenzie.
Residents took advantage of the fair, where they were given free checks for diabetes, high cholesterol, breast and cervical cancer among other ailments by the visiting group, among whom are Carryl’s wife Jo Ann, Philene Blair, Terry Gravesande, who is a physician’s assistant, and Trinidadian Donna Constantine.
A paediatric outreach was undertaken yesterday at the Wisroc Community Centre and today the exercise will continue at Muritaro, further along the Demerara River.
The United States (U.S.) Chapter of Linden Fund is responsible for coordinating the visit that is being hosted in collaboration with the OMAT and the Women of Mission (WOM), according Ms. Linden Felix-Johnson, Secretary of the Linden Fund U.S.A.
Several surgical operations have been done at the Linden Hospital Complex by Carryl who has been the spearhead of the venture over the years.
