GUYANESE-born New York State Police Trooper Winston I. Martindale, Jr., died on Wednesday of complications from an on-duty injury he sustained in 2011.
Police say that on May 9, 2011, while responding to the crash of two small airplanes in the town of Waywanda, in Orange County, Martindale fell on a piece of equipment, causing internal bleeding to his abdomen. Though seriously injured, Martindale struggled with heavy wreckage to assist victims of the plane crash and stayed at the crash scene for six hours.
Ultimately, both pilots of the single-engined airplanes died.
After suffering through several serious medical procedures to combat his injuries and further complications, Martindale died following surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a statement saying, in part: “Trooper Martindale courageously battled serious medical hardships for more than two years, and passed away on Wednesday (July 24). He was just 40 years old – a tragic, heartbreaking loss. We will never forget Trooper Martindale’s selfless sacrifice, dedication, and bravery in rushing into a dangerous situation to protect the lives of others. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest condolences and send my thoughts and prayers to the loved ones that Trooper Martindale left behind.”
Trooper Martindale, who reportedly attended St. Margaret’s Primary School and Queen’s College before migrating to the United States, was a seven-year police veteran and as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves; he served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle, 19-year-old son, Kyle, and 15-year-old daughter, Moriah.
