Store employee charged with stealing $200,000 cellphone

A TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD woman appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with simple larceny.
Keisha Mars, of Lot 203 Middle Road, La Penitence, pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between July 8 and 12, at Gizmos and Gadgets, also in Georgetown, she stole one cellular phone valued $200,000. Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, said investigations in the case are not quite complete and the defendant was put on $125,000 bail until September 6.
Defence counsel Euclin Gomes told the Court that Mars was employed at the Wellington Street business place for the past nine months.

Man accused of wounding ex-paramour remanded
SEAN Jones, 33, of Lot 84 Onderneeming Public Road, West Bank Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday, charged with unlawful wounding.
Before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the indictable charge against him said he unlawfully wounded his ex-paramour, Yonette Barrington on Friday, July 19, at Port Kaituma, in the North West District.
Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, said, that day, the 42-year-old woman, of Lot 62 Hadfield Street, Georgetown, called out to the accused while he was at a shop, around 19:45 hrs, but he became annoyed because she had returned to Port Kaituma and did not inform him and cuffed her in the face.
He then removed a knife from his pants waist and dealt the virtual complainant several stabs about the body, including her breasts.
The prosecutor said Jones, orally, admitted to the offence when he was told of the allegation and Barrington sought medical attention at the Port Kaituma Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she is still a patient.
In successfully objecting to bail for Jones, the prosecutor said he previously faced a charge of a similar nature involving the same woman.
Despite Defence counsel Trenton Lake denying that Jones has no previous pending matter, the latter was refused pre-trial freedom and the case will next be called at Matthews Ridge Court, also in the North West District, to which it has been sent, on transfer, August 6.  

Main Street robbery accused refused bail  
LEROY Garraway, of Lot 37 Middleton Street,Campbellville, Georgetown, was refused bail, on a robbery charge yesterday.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on Wednesday, July 17, in Main Street, Georgetown, he robbed Raman Nezamudeen of $460,000 and, immediately after, used personal violence on the virtual complainant.
Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the Court that the defendant and Nezamudeen are known to each other and the latter was riding along Main Street when the accused, who was sitting in the area, armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the victim several lashes causing injuries, then relieved him of the money.
Citing the seriousness of the crime, the prosecutor successfully objected to bail on the ground of its prevalence and Garraway will remain incarcerated until July 31.

Defendant father-in-law bonded, put on $20,00 bail
KIRK Hinds, of Lot 3794 Beaver Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with assault.
The 57-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence which alleged that, on Wednesday, July 17, in North Ruimveldt, he unlawfully assaulted his daughter-in-law Shasantie Mangru.
On an application by defence counsel Paul Fung-a-Fat, for surety of a reasonable sum, it was set at $20,000 and Hinds was bonded to keep the peace pending the outcome of the case, which will be called, again, July 29.
