PAHO/WHO donates $1.5M sports equipment to CCPA

PAN-AMERICAN Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), yesterday, handed over $1.5M worth of sports equipment to the Childcare and Protection Agency (CCPA) of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security. During the formalities, at the recipient’s Broad and Charles Streets, Charlestown, Georgetown office, Mr. Adrianus Vlugman said PAHOWHO was very happy to make the donation to further develop the physical activity programme of the CCPA.
“This programme is being executed with the aim to encourage young persons and their guardians to engage in these activities regularly,” he noted.
He cautioned that lack of physical activities is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and almost 60 percent of annual deaths in Guyana are related to such ailments.
Vlugman said other risk factors include the consumption of too many sugary and fatty foods, abuse of alcohol and smoking.
He explained, further, that all of the risks surround “lifestyles” which are developed early, when children are still in school and PAHO/WHO health promotion initiatives run across all of the health programmes.
“That is why PAHO/WHO works with multiple partners to address youth issues, especially in school and community settings and encourages, among others, physical activity,” Vlugman asserted.

Ample opportunities
Alluding to the talents of students and their athletic skills, he remarked that the older generation owes it to the youth to provide ample opportunities for developing them.
Vlugman said studies have shown that regular activities improve not only physical but mental development and students’ ability to learn while becoming members of a sports club assists young people in developing social contacts and integration into society.
Among the gifts received by the CCPA are cricket gear, such as bats, gloves, wickets,  footballs, volleyballs, basketball rings with nets, lawn tennis racquets and balls, skipping ropes and fun hoops.
He urged the children under the CCPA to enjoy the uses and have fun.
“We are convinced that these will not only bring joy and fun, but also opportunities to better health and longer life for the youngsters going to use them. And, who knows, there might be a West Indies cricketer or Olympic medalist among them,” Vlugman stated.
He mentioned that PAHO/WHO has been a longstanding partner of several Ministries in Guyana, including those of Health, Education, Agriculture, Culture, Youth and Sport before the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, in the fight against NCDs.
“…. and we renew this commitment today as, together, we showcase national and community level activities to promote healthy living and encourage young and old to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles and practices,” Vlugman pledged.

Timely donation
Responding, CCPA Director, Ms. Ann Greene expressed gratitude to the donor organisations for what she acknowledged is a timely donation which will enhance the various activities for children during the August vacation.
She said her agency has a full programme for the children during this period, consisting not only of various sporting activities, but educational tours, as well.
Greene emphasised the importance of collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which CCPA welcomes as it encourages others to get involved.
She invited persons from every segment of society to come on board with the child protection process, maintaining that it is everybody’s business.
Greene said the quantity of the gifted equipment would even allow CCPA to share with other State care centres for children.
