NOT known for giving cyclists and cycling fans alike mediocrity with their programme, the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) Intends to maintain that high standard, hence the postponement of today’s 10 race event scheduled to be held around the Seawall Bandstand.
The present inclement weather has forced the postponement of this event which is being sponsored by Bryden and Fernandes, a subsidiary of the John Fernandes Group of Companies.
According to RBC’s president Brian Allen, the club took a conscious decision to reschedule the races in the interest of cyclists’ safety, while Allen took the time to apologize to cyclists and fans for the postponement, noting that the club will run off the event as soon as the weather becomes favourable.
“At the end of the day, we want safety for the riders, and that’s the reason we decided to put the event on hold. As we understand, more rain is predicted for the rest of today [yesterday] and tomorrow [today], so we don’t want to take unnecessary risks,” Allen pointed out.
Allen said the aim of utilizing the Seawall Bandstand is to generate spectators’ interest in the sport, and he’s pleased that Bryden and Fernandes has seen it fit to assist in this regard, following their successful staging of one such event earlier this month.
He was referring to the 10th Annual RBC/National Milling Company (Namilco)/’Wheat Up’ Caricom Day 10 race programme that was held on July 1 around the Seawall Bandstand and attracted a massive crowd for the first time, and expressed his confidence that the Bryden and Fernandes’ activity when held will be just as successful.
Leading cyclists from across the country will compete in the feature race, the Bryden and Fernandes Classic, which will go for 30-laps and carries a top prize of $10,000 and according to Allen, the top six finishers will receive cash incentives.
Other races carded for the day include the 12-14 Juveniles (three laps), Junior/Category Four (five laps), Category 1-3 (five laps), Veteran Over-50 (five laps), Veteran Under-50 (five laps), Team Time Trial (four laps), Win and Out (eight laps), Mountain Bike Open (five laps) and Female Open (five laps), wherein the top three finishers will collect cash awards.
