The return service, LI 521, will leave Ogle at 3:00pm, arriving in Barbados at 4:50pm.
This will be the first commercial flight by LIAT to and from the Ogle International Airport since the airport was certified as a Regional Class Airport on March 26, 2013 last.
It has been disclosed that the LIAT/Ogle relationship started since 2010 when the management of the Airport shared their plans to extend the runway to accommodate ATR series and Dash-8 series aircraft of the LIAT fleet.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
It was determined then by LIAT that the closer proximity of the Ogle International Airport to the Guyana capital, Georgetown, would give the company a competitive advantage in that flying into Ogle would mean reduced flying time.
The reduced flying time, it was calculated, amounts to a significant annual fuel reduction of approximately 93,000 gallons per annum.
It was then that LIAT’s executive management immediately agreed to review the possibility of beginning the service to Ogle as an alternative to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Meanwhile, sources close to the local aviation industry pointed out that passengers will also benefit from the flight schedule and the airport’s proximity to Georgetown.
The regional carriers generally carry 50 passengers, so they would not have to take three hours to check-in. People could check-in in half an hour. Then they wait for another half hour and they are off.
MORE CONVENIENT FLIGHT TIMES
An official at the airport explained that the reason Guyana has flights at 6:00am and 5:00am and other early morning hours is because this is the last destination in the Caribbean.
Guyana, he said, is at the bottom – flights commence here and flights end here. Now with LIAT here, Guyanese travelling regionally will have options.
Meanwhile, in its weekend media release, LIAT also announced that in addition to the daily flights to and from Ogle, it will shortly introduce a late night and early morning departure flight to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Its flight LI 773 will depart the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados at 8:00pm daily, arriving at the Cheddi Jagan International at 10:00pm. And LI 774 will depart Cheddi Jagan International at 5:00am daily, arriving in Barbados at 7:00am.
OGL and GEO
The company advised travellers that when making a reservation for travel to Guyana, they should be aware that OGL represents the Ogle International Airport and GEO, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
LIAT is one of the leading Caribbean airlines. It is owned by regional shareholders, with major shareholders being the Governments of Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
