THE OBSERVER… Opposition patriotism on trial, again

Despite political differences, no issue must stand in the way of promoting, safeguarding, and advancing the national interest. For this is about the preservation and promulgation of all the best possible opportunities for the nation and its peoples. Therefore, this is a call to the highest form of patriotism in which there must be no ambiguity, since anything else would clearly be disloyal to the highest ideals of service to the motherland.

This summation aptly applies to a situation in Guyana where, once again, the nation’s progress may be threatened due to a peculiar type of parliamentary Opposition behaviour that has been prevalent in the legislative life of the 10 Parliament.
Since the PPP/C government’s decision to introduce hydroelectricity in the form of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project is well documented and disseminated to the public, there is no need for repetition.
Except to state the obvious – that it is the most important socio-economic programme to be introduced to the nation and is central to the national transformation in progress.
Therefore, it stands to good reason that both opposition parties’ support for the two pivotal pieces of legislation, relevant to the project’s receiving funding from the Inter-American Development Bank, should be assured and forthcoming, when Parliament re-convenes today.
The nation does not expect any demand for political trade-offs that has become a pre-condition for especially the Alliance For Change’s (AFC) participation in national politics.
It is the nation and its progress that will benefit, with the fullest support of the Opposition; or stagnate without the latter’s input.
Once again, Opposition patriotism is on trial
