On second Court appearance… Brazilians on gun charge remanded to September 3

TWO Brazilians were remanded to prison, again yesterday, after their second court appearance on an unlicensed gun charge.

They first appeared, on Tuesday, before Magistrate Judy Latchman, charged with being in possession of a firearm without licence.
Jointly charged 24-year-old Isaque Riberio De Ouvero and Oziel Des Santos Viera, 28, who, through an interpreter, pleaded not guilty to the offence were then denied bail.
It is alleged that, on Friday, July 12, at Takutu Bridge, Central Rupununi, they had a 20-gauge single-barrelled shotgun while not being the lawful holders of licences.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court, that night around 22:00 hrs, ranks on foot patrol, along the bridge bordering Guyana and Brazil, observed the defendants walking beneath the structure with the aid of a flashlight.
The prosecutor said, after they were confronted by the police, one of them dropped a bag he was carrying and attempted to flee but both of them were apprehended and the weapon was found as a result of a search.
Pre-trial freedom was denied the duo, based on the prosecutor’s objection, citing the seriousness of the crime and the likelihood of the men absconding.
Magistrate Latchman ruled in favour of the Prosecution and also transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who, yesterday, further remanded the Brazilians and they will make their next appearance at Lethem Court, also in Rupununi, on September 3.
