GPF apologises to embarrassed mother of slain cop

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) has offered a public apology to Ms. Stacy Pitman, the mother of late Constable 21600 Dorwin Pitman and other relatives, for any embarrassment caused at the July 14 Wreath Laying Ceremony.

The institution apologised in the wake of an article published in the July 16 Kaieteur News, about the invitation received by the parent of the deceased cop, who died while on duty.
The GPF said the circumstances surrounding the death of Constable Pitman, who suffered a cardiac arrest while making efforts to recapture an escaped prisoner on June 10, were not consistent with the criteria for consideration to be listed on the Fallen Heroes Monument among ranks killed in the line of duty.
However, inadvertently, a letter from the GPF had invited the woman to lay a wreath at the Monument Site during the ceremony Sunday last although she was not catered for on the official programme.
“The unfortunate chain of events is sincerely regretted,” the GPF said in the correspondence.
