THE Monday afternoon Rubis fuel station armed robbery, at Vlissengen Road and Eping Avenue, Bel Air Park, Georgetown, has left employees there traumatised.
One of two gunmen discharged two gunshots before escaping with $1M in broad daylight. Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, the supervisor, who asked not to named, admitted she is very fortunate not to have been injured during the incident which caused her and the other workers to be “shaken up”, noting the brazen attitude of the bandits.
The woman reported that, about 16:30 hrs, two men arrived on a motorcycle, parked it near the entrance to the mini-mart and entered the place posing as customers. They were asked if they wanted assistance in finding the wine for which they claimed to be looking but did not answer.
The staffer said, at that point, one of the duo remained by the door to the mini-mart while the other went into the office after he was requested to put down the haversack he was carrying.
She said: “At first, I thought he was a shoplifter and I asked him to put down the bag he had but he still did not answer.”
The woman related that the men then went into the office, demanded money and enquired of the “boss”. When told that person was not present, the robber asked who had the money and the supervisor’s name was called.
She said she heard her name called out aloud and knew that something was amiss as she was attending to a customer, a Chinese national at the cashier’s counter. She tried to exit the premises but was prevented from doing so by the bandit who was standing guard by the door.
The woman said she was taken to the office to join two other employees and forced to hand over a bag containing with $1M cash when the angry gunman fired two shots in the direction of the roof.
She said, after the robbery, the men walked out and went away on the motorcycle before the police turned up at the scene.
The Rubis employee said police ranks revisited the place yesterday and took statements after processing the location but no arrests have yet been made in the continuing investigations.
Unfortunately, the surveillance cameras at the establishment were turned off to facilitate an electrical upgrade at the time of the heist and no images were captured.
