In Region 3… : Works to fix community roads moving apace : – Faerber

CHAIRMAN of Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Mr. Julius Faerber has indicated that works to have roads fixed in the various communities are moving apace.
In a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, he said maintenance of those in Uitvlugt Pasture and De Groot-en-Klien, on West Coast Demerara, among others, were included in the Regional annual development budget after being submitted by the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).
Some of the jobs have already started since the subventions were allocated and it is the responsibility of the NDCs to ensure that they are done in a proper manner, he added. Faerber said he has, indeed, received numerous complaints from residents about the state of the thoroughfares in different areas of West Coast Demerara.
He pointed out that the RDC would, usually, just look after one or two of them in an area, to assist the NDCs but mainly in worst case scenarios where earthen materials alone were used and, as such, are deemed very important to have improvements done first.

Send reports
Faerber emphasised that, in instances where the construction is damaged by everyday wear and tear, it is the concern of the NDCs to look after them and send reports to the RDC.
He said all that is done by the Government of Guyana, in keeping with its mandate to improve and make the lives of Guyanese better and the Administration would try to do as much as possible for the further benefit of its citizens.
Meanwhile, commenting on the issue of illegal roadside vending in the region, Faerber admitted that there is, indeed, an unmanageable situation where vendors sell illegally on corners.
He said the RDC is working with the NDCs and the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to take stringent actions for having those persons removed but they are refusing to relocate.
Faerber said motorists and cyclists, especially, have been complaining about the congestion and firm measures are being taken, not only to take the sellers off the roadways but to keep them there, as well.
He disclosed that the areas most plagued by the illegality are Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara; Patentia, West Bank Demerara and Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
Nevertheless, the chairman encouraged persons who have complaints regarding the functioning of their communities to raise them with their NDCs or the RDC.
