WOMEN’s world number 26, Nicolette Fernandes reigned supreme in the women’s singles, but was not enough to overcome defending men’s champion Alex Arjoon in the men’s singles when the curtains came down in the Digicel Senior National Squash Championships yesterday at the courts of the Georgetown Club, Camp Street.
Coming up against former Caribbean champion Ashley Khalil in the women’s singles, Fernandes managed to close the match off in straight sets, finishing 11 – 1, 11 – 9, 11 – 5, but it was a tougher time against Arjoon who refused to be intimated by the reigning Caribbean women’s champion.
Fernandes manage to keep Arjoon at bay in the first set, guiding things to a 11 – 7 end in her favour, but Arjoon wasn’t done yet and fought back enough to take the second set 11 – 5.
Fernandes regrouped to claim the third set 11 – 9, but Arjoon once again worked hard to even the score and took the fourth set 11 – 7 to send the match to a decisive fifth set, which he won easily from Fernandes in an 11 – 1 score, to claim his third consecutive title over Fernandes.
In the men’s third place play off, Jason-Ray Khalil got the better of former national champion Regan Pollard in straight sets. After being ousted in the semi finals by Fernandes on Saturday, Khalil finished the competition in third place after winning 11 – 9, 11 – 9, 11 – 5 over Pollard.
It was another five set match in the fight for the women’s singles third place position, which saw Ashley DeGroot posited against four time junior Caribbean champion Mary Fung A Fat. De Groot defeated Fung A Fat 11 -9, 3 -11, 11 – 8, 7 – 11, 11 – 7.
