MURDER accused, Marlon Ganesh who allegedly murdered his father-in-law Roopnarine Singh in 2008 during a row at a family get together at ‘A’ Field, Sophia, is being represented by Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Huckumchand who is leading a defence of self-defence.
Mr. Huckumchand addressed the jury yesterday asking them to give his client the benefit of the doubt by returning a verdict of not guilty.
Prosecutrix Miss Renita Singh will address the jury today.
Roopnarine Singh called Kumar, 47, lived at his home at Sophia, East Coast Demerara. Before his death he lived there with his daughter, Babloo Singh and her husband, the accused, Marlon Ganesh, 29.
Babloo Singh is regarded as the star witness in the case. The accused lived with his wife, Babloo and her family.
On December 25, 2008, Christmas Day, there was a get-together at the home at which the accused and the deceased were consuming alcohol from about 15.00 hrs until about 23:00hrs when the accused and his wife got into a misunderstanding.
According to witnesses, the accused was using profane language, cussing his wife and making reference to her mother when the deceased got involved telling the accused not to cuss about his daughter’s mother. The accused however continued to hurl profanities at both his wife and the deceased and the argument continued. The deceased then informed the accused that he would have to move out of the house if he continued his behaviour to which the accused replied that was no problem and began to pack his clothes in a salt bag.
The accused was packing his clothes slowly and the deceased asked him to hurry up and pointed out that he wanted to go to bed.
After the deceased kept insisting on the accused to hurry up, the accused became angry and attacked the deceased by pushing him. This pushing, it is said, was followed by the accused resorting to the use of a knife that was used to stab the deceased.
Roopnarine who was seriously injured, later died in hospital.
The trial continues today before Justice Dawn Gregory and a mixed jury.
