Man, 54, fined $80,000 for assaulting 3-yr-old boy

SECURITY Guard, Andre Williams, convicted of hitting a three-year-old child resulting in a nose bleed, was fined $80,000 with the alternative of three months imprisonment yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to the unlawful assault charge and told Magistrate Fabayo Azore he did not realise how hard he had hit the boy.
“I’m sorry, it wasn’t premeditated,” the defendant said, when the magistrate enquired of him if he had anything to say before sentence.
The court heard that, on July 3, in Agricola, Greater Georgetown, the 54-year-old man, of Lot 117 Caesar Street, Agricola, unlawfully assaulted Akeem Thorton.
Police Sergeant, Burgette Grant, prosecuting, said the boy was playing in his home, at Agricola, when his mother went two doors away to speak with a neighbour, leaving him in the care of his father.
Suddenly, she heard someone calling her and she rushed home to find her son bleeding through his nose. When she inquired what happened, she was informed that her son had gone to retrieve his balloon in the neighbour’s yard when the defendant slapped and butted him and a report was made to the police.
Asked by the magistrate, Williams said he slapped the boy because he had spat on him but did not butt the child.
Apart from stating that he was sorry, Williams said he had apologised to the boy’s father.
The magistrate then told Williams that, although he seemed apologetic, she, however, took into consideration that he is a grown adult and he should, obviously, have had better judgement over a three-year-old.
But causing his nose to bleed means that some harsh force was used, she observed.
