Burnham’s published parliamentary speeches to be handed over to National Assembly today – first volume

SPEAKER of the National Assembly, Mr Raphael Trotman will, today, receive the first volume of the published parliamentary speeches of late President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, O.E., S.C.
The volume will be handed over at Parliament Buildings by Prof. David Dabydeen, the Director of Caribbean Press – publishers of the compilation of speeches.

altThe decision to compile, edit and publish the speeches of all Presidents came about following the adoption of Resolution No. 67 that requested the “National Assembly to designate a state institution to be responsible for historical research and documentation to chronicle and archive all of the works of each of the presidents of Guyana for the benefit of future generations of Guyanese.”alt
This resolution was passed by the National Assembly on the 7th August, 2008, after which the National Assembly took measures to have the verbatim records of the late Presidents compiled.
Under the supervision of Mr. Maurice Henry and the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Staff of the Parliament Office transferred the hard copies of the verbatim records to soft copies and compiled the first volume of the Late President’s speeches.
altAccording to a statement yesterday from the Speaker, this is an ongoing project that began in the 9th Parliament and continues. To date, the Caribbean Press, under the directorship of Prof. David Dabydeen, has printed, published and presented the speeches of former President Dr. Cheddi Jagan. O.L.

It will today present the first instalment of President Burnham’s outstanding speeches to the Speaker of the House.
