Man accused of robbing policeman remanded

TRAVIS Anthony King, 20, of Lot 461 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, charged with armed robbery and using threatening language.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence which alleged that, on Sunday, June 30, at West Ruimveldt Front Road, he robbed policeman Colin Blair of a gold chain worth $150,000, but admitted that on Monday, July 1, he threatened to shoot the virtual complainant, for which he was fined $20,000.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, told the Court that around 20:30 hrs on June 30, the victim was returning home after visiting Laing Avenue. He was wearing the jewel on his neck and, while crossing a bridge, was confronted by the defendant and another male.
The prosecutor said King pulled a firearm from his pants waist and pointed it at the victim as he snatched the chain and rode away on a bicycle but, with the assistance of public-spirited citizens, the booty was recovered.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail and the defendant was remanded to prison until July 19.
