Greaves dominates field to take feature event … cops six sprint prizes as well

TACTICAL and brilliant riding from Roraima Bikers Club’s (RBC) Alanzo Greaves, saw the rider take the top prize in the feature event of yesterday’s 10th Annual RBC/National Milling Company ‘Wheat Up Classic’ 10-race cycle programme held around the Seawall Bandstand in a time of 1h. 04m: 41secs.

alttop six paying positions in the event which saw the cyclists, 25 of whom faced the starter complete 30 laps in sweltering heat.
The day’s event was witnessed in part by Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of NAMILCO Bert Sukhai, Patron of RBC George Humphrey and Chief Financial Officer of NAMILCO Fitzroy McLeod and other cycling enthusiasts.
As early as the first lap, Greaves, DeNobrega and Pollydore made their intentions known, when they moved to the front of the peloton and held a slim lead of 25 metres for close to four laps, before they were joined by Hinds, Eastman and Williams later on. alt
Close behind, a keen tussle ensued between Warren ‘40’ McKay and newly crowned Guyana Cycling Federation Junior Road Race and Time Trial champion Michael Anthony, which the latter won after the former called it quits with just under 10 laps to go.
McKay exited the race as well as Junior Niles, Walter Grant-Stuart and several other prominent cyclists, who found the pace of the six leaders tough, with Greaves overlapping all but the other five finishers behind him.
In fact, the dominance of the RBC ace cyclists saw only the top six complete the event, with Greaves taking home six of the 15 sprint prizes that were up for grabs, while Pollydore showed the appreciative crowd he can still sprint, when he did so to take the second place from Hinds (four), with DeNobrega and Eastman two each and Hinds the other.
Greaves took home $30 000, a trophy and certificate, while Pollydore and DeNobrega received $25 000 and $15 000 respectively, with trophies and certificate, with Hinds, Eastman and Williams collecting $7 000, $6 000 and $4 000 respectively.
Laps 10, 20 and 30 saw the sponsors donate 10 packs of Wheat Up to the cyclist who crossed the line first and those were awarded to Hinds (lap 10), Pollydore (lap 20) and Greaves (lap 30).
Prior to Greaves’ win, he led RBC’s four-man team that included himself, McKay, Raymond Newton and Mario King, to the Team Time Trial title after they completed the four laps in a time of 8m:44secs ahead of Team Coco (DeNobrega, Niles, Anthony and Christopher Holder (8m.15:56secs and Flying Stars quartet of Akeem Wilson, Alanzo Ambrose, Hector Edwards 111 and Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson’s time of 8m.20:70secs as the top three teams received $10 000, $8 000 and $6 000 in that order.
The day’s event began with Eastman riding away with the Category 4/Junior event from Anthony and Shakuel Agard, followed by Hinds win in the Category 1 to 3 over McKay and Pollydore, Niles’ victory in the Veterans Under-50 from Jackson and Preston Stanley and Virgil Jones’ triumph in the Over-50 category from Monty Parris and Lancelot Rose.
Romeo Crawford took the Juveniles 12 to 14 race from Adriel Ross and Andrew Hicks, Hosea MacAulay continued his dominance over the other competitors in the Mountain Bike category, taking that win from Richard Charles and Clyde Jacobs.
Naomi Singh took the Female event from Marica Dick and Toshawna Doris, Pollydore stamped his authority over the field to take the Win and Out eight-lap race from Anthony and Hinds, Sherwin Sampson the BMX 6 to 9 event over Jeremiah Harrison and Jamal John and the 10 to 14 Category over Raphael Leung and Bryton John.
The cash prizes issued for the other winners are BMX events – $3 000, $2 000 and $1 500 respectively, while for the Females, Mountain Bikes and 12 to 14 Juvenile category winners, the top three finishers will pocket $5 000, $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.
The Categories 1 to 3, Category 4 and Category 5, Veterans Under-50 and Veterans Over-50 top three finishers will pedal off with $6 000, $4 000 and $3 000 respectively.
