Magistrate orders psychiatric evaluation for break-&-enter defendant

KAREEM Stewart, who appeared to be mentally unstable, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday, to answer an allegation of break and enter.

The 19-year-old pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which alleged that, on Thursday, June 27, at Lot 556 Toucan Drive, he broke and entered the property of Somwattie Ally with intent to commit a felony.
Stewart interrupted Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar as she read the charges to the court by saying, “That’s a lie!”, and, “Another lie!”
Prosecutor Pindar informed the court that, on the day in question, the complainant went home and saw the defendant in her yard; and after she had made several checks, she observed that the locks were broken. Stewart was subsequently arrested and charged.
Stewart said, “That’s not her place, but me and she can be friends.” He then told the magistrate: “Shoot me in my head, since I don’t know what’s wrong with my head; but I will still go to heaven.”
Magistrate Beharry instructed Prosecutor Pindar to take the defendant for psychiatric evaluation for 14 days, and remanded him to the prison until July 12.
As he departed the courtroom, he told the magistrate, “Bye bye, I kinda like you.”
