Murder accused Christopher Anderson, 58, whom it is said murdered his uncle Garnett Woolford in 2009, yesterday pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by Justice Navindra Singh.
Justice Singh noted from the record of evidence and the post-mortem report that death was due to haemorrhage caused by an incised wound to the brain inflicted with a cutlass on the 4th of May, 2009.
Prosecutor Natasha Backer had, in a narration of the facts to the judge, disclosed that the accused and his uncle had a problem and the uncle had taken steps to have the accused removed from a building in Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt.
It is said that after a party of policemen had attempted to get the accused out of the room he was occupying, he threw a cup of coffee he was drinking on one of the policemen.
The police party then withdrew. It is stated that following the withdrawal of the police, the accused attacked his uncle with a cutlass and dealt him several chops about the body which resulted in his death.
Yesterday the accused told the court that because of severe provocation, he lost his composure and chopped away at his uncle.
Before the accused decided to plead to the lesser count, the judge told him about the benefits he could derive from the jury trial, but the accused insisted that he wished to plead guilty and declared that, “The Almighty is at work.”
The judge, in imposing sentence, told the accused that because of the circumstances of the case, he would begin with 30 years, and after adding and deducting from that figure, the judge decided to impose a sentence of 20 years.
The accused, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Peter Hugh, then said, “Thank you.”
Miss Natasha Backer and Miss Dhanika Singh appeared for the prosecution.
