Duo pleads guilty to ‘weed’ possession : – sentenced to 80 hours community service

TWO men facing separate charges of marijuana possession, admitted to the offence, and were together sentenced to eighty hours of community service, following their appearance before Magistrate Roby Benn at the New Amsterdam Court on Monday. Defendants David Williams and Michael Campbell were ordered to complete the community service within three months or they will have to each serve one year imprisonment.
However, a third defendant, Kirk Campbell, who is alleged to have trafficked eighty-seven grams of marijuana denied the charge, and was remanded to prison until July 2 for trial.
The twenty -seven year-old Williams,  alias ‘Dog Face’ and ‘Dew Fish’, had in his possession two grams of cannabis sativa when police were making routine checks for illegal substances on Republic Road in New Amsterdam, Berbice on June 21 last.
A repeat offender, Williams who is an animal cart operator, admitted to the charge and said he did not want to waste the court’s time, although he was disgusted with the constant harassment by law enforcement officers.
Meanwhile, during the same routine raid, twenty-year-old Michael Campbell of Lot 45 Stanleytown was found with one gram of the illegal herb. He informed the magistrate that the leaves, seeds, and stems of the plant, which he would smoke, had belonged to him.
Along with Williams, Campbell was fined $5,000, with an alternative of three months imprisonment. However, Williams was unable to pay his fine and is currently remanded to prison.
However, Kirk Campbell, age 30 years, was remanded to prison after Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Phillip Sherriff disclosed that the ganja was found under a bed in the defendant’s home at High Dam, Mount Sinai.
But this defendant, in a plea for pretrial liberty, argued that he was in his yard weeding when the police arrived, and that several persons had run into his home at the time. However, the prosecutor noted that the defendant did not advance any special reason for him to be granted bail and should be remanded as he was present when portions of the illegal plant were discovered.
