Sophia murder trial ends Tuesday : …accused Romo says: ‘I acted in self-defence’

JUSTICE James Bovell–Drakes, the presiding judge in the Sophia murder trial, will sum up the evidence on Tuesday after which he would hand over the case to the jury for their consideration and verdict. Judge Bovell-Drakes explained this to the jury yesterday afternoon after listening to addresses to the jury by defence and prosecution lawyers.
At the trial the State is alleging that the accused Romo Andrews attacked Andrew Thomas on the day in question after blaming Thomas for blocking his view while he was looking at a TV show.
The State is alleging that the accused Romo Andrews slashed Andrew Thomas across the neck, causing his death from shock and haemorrhage.
The State is alleging that the incident followed an altercation at a shop where Thomas, now deceased, had been openly accused by Andrews of blocking his view at the shop where persons were enjoying a TV show.
The accused, in a statement from the dock, claimed that after he castigated Thomas for blocking his view on August 16, 2009, Thomas withdrew a dog chain from the waist of his pants and was approaching him menacingly with the weapon.
Andrews said he became fearful for his life and as Thomas raised his hand, he fired a lash at him and ran away.
Later his counsel Huckumchand told the jury that the law   gives his client the right to defend himself when attacked even though death resulted from his defence.
However Prosecutors Natasha Backer and Dhanika Singh thought otherwise.
In addressing the jury, Backer assured them that the State had established a case against the accused and urged them to return a verdict in accordance with the evidence and the oath they had taken.
The judge who will sum up the evidence on Tuesday told the jury to keep an open mind and
warned them not to discuss the case even among themselves, and to keep an open mind until the matter was handed over to them.
