AN independent special audit of the University of Guyana (UG) accounts is expected to be completed by September, the Vice- Chancellor, Professor Jacob Opadeyi indicated yesterday.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that the auditing is being facilitated by the University of the West Indies (UWI).
Previously, in April, UG Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Prem Misir had said the exercise was being undertaken in an effort to find a solution to the “huge deficit” faced by the academic institution.
He explained, then, that year after year there has been an increase in the deficit and that problem needs to be solved.
Dr Misir said the University Council had decided to have the books checked and, in order to facilitate this, Bursar John Seeram and Chief Accountant Hazel Bentick were sent on leave.
Amidst suggestions that the two senior officials were suspected of being involved in financial impropriety, Misir said that was not the case but the action was taken to allow the special exercise to be done objectively.
He had also stated that the replacement for those two senior functionaries would be provided by the Ministry of Education.
