THE media in Guyana seem to be divided either as anti-government or leaning towards government. Neither may be good for Guyana in the long run.
However, it is the anti-government media that may present the greatest threat to progress and stability. One newspaper seems determined to omit any news that may seem to be positive about the government or anything good happening in the country.
Even worse, they seem willing to print anything to the contrary, whether true, partly true or simply wrong as long as the government is seen unfavourably.
The bloggers in one newspaper have taken the position that anything said by government, PPP/C or anyone that simply disagrees with them are government stooges or worse. More frightening, is the so-called soup drinkers (unwilling to face facts) found among all the parties’ supporters and the racially obsessed ones. That is why fair and factual media are necessary to prevent misinformation from causing unnecessary turmoil and even loss of life.
One welcomes any newspaper that challenges what we hear from the government or any institutions or individuals if it seems misleading or untrue, but not if the newspapers are the ones guilty of doing some of these things themselves.
Because of the anti-government media, it is vitally important that other media, whether it tends to lean towards government or not,to never fail to hold government accountable, when necessary, by seeking and demanding information and clarifications on issues of national importance.
All media whether supported by government funds or not, must remember their obligation is to the public, and not to simply support or oppose any government or party without valid reasons.
