Woman jailed for injuring disobedient stepson

SECURITY Guard Ramrajie Deonarine, who pelted her stepson with a piece of wood after he refused to take a bath, was sentenced to seven days imprisonment, yesterday.
The penalty was imposed by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, before whom she appeared at the New Amsterdam Court in Berbice.

Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, said, on June 5, the defendant lived with her reputed husband and his son at Fourth Street, Islington Village, East Bank Berbice.
In addition, the defendant’s three children resided in the same home and, that day, Deonarine instructed all the children to bathe but they hesitated.
She, subsequently, ordered her stepson, Rondel Barry called Ron, to go in the bathroom but he wavered after he saw that the defendant’s offspring were not obeying her.
Consequently, the defendant became annoyed, picked up a piece of wood and threw it on the ten-year-old resulting in him suffering head injuries.
In her defence, Deonarine said she did not expect the object to hit the boy.
She said she was aware that the offence carries a term of imprisonment and she is sorry.
