Alleged drag race drivers committed for causing death

SEAN and Steve Ramsarran, alleged drag race drivers who are accused of causing the death of two persons on Canje Public Road, Berbice, in 2010, have been committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Berbice Assizes.

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo ordered their committal after ruling that a prima facie case had been made out against them in the New Amsterdam Court.
Consequently, they were each ordered to post $250,000 bail.
The allegation against them is that, on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at 19:30 hrs, Sean Ramsarran drove HB 7214 and Steve Ramsarran HB 6777 on the Number Two Public Road, East Canje, recklessly, at a speed and manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Tony Tayloo and Suracedyal Kalipersaud.
Both drivers had lost control of their vehicles and, at the time, Kalipersaud was a front seat passenger of Sean Ramsarran and Tayloo, who was riding his pedal cycle, died instantly.
Sean Ramsarran‘s toppled several times and ended up in a nearby trench on the northern parapet of the Number Two Public Road with its four wheels suspended and the rest partly submerged in a drain.
Police Prosecutor, Superintendent Fazil Karimbaksh submitted that all the essential ingredients of the offences had been proven and there is enough evidence from which a jury can decide.
