THE Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), youth arm of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, hosted a mini health fair, last Sunday, at the Enmore Martyrs Monument Site on the East Coast of Demerara.
It was to mark the observance of the 65th death anniversary of the five Enmore Martyrs, who died while fighting for the betterment of workers in the sugar industry and offered persons both medical and dental care
Head of the PYO Health Committee, Sawan Jagnarain, told the Guyana Chronicle the event was for the benefit of those who travelled all the way from destinations in Essequibo, Berbice and the East Bank of Demerara.
He said it actually showcased what young people are capable of, since the team who arranged it, was made up of persons below the age of 30 years.
Those who attended were given the opportunity to secure free medical attention in areas such as blood pressure and glucose testing and check-ups by a doctor, as well as free pharmaceuticals.
Dental care available included cleaning, filling and extraction of teeth and Jagnarain pointed out that, although there is a clinic nearby, there was still an “excellent turnout” by members of the public.
He said the chairs were kept occupied by persons taking advantage of the occasion, from 10:00 hrs to 16:00 hrs, indicating the awareness it created in the community.
Jagnarain said there was also a referral system through which patients were referred to the closest health centre, something which they encouraged especially for persons affected by chronic diseases.
