CABINET has granted its no-objection to a number of contracts in the health sector, that would boost the operations of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon made the disclosure, last Thursday, at his usual post-Cabinet media briefing in Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown. One contract, for US$105,771 is for the procurement of one steam sterilizer; another will buy two all purpose ventilators for US$17.9M; one more would secure janitorial and cleaning supplies for $26.17M; the next to get laboratory supplies for US$43.3M and US$91,378 to buy two mobile x-ray machines.
Just recently, the GPHC received a grant of US$90,000 from the Government and people of Japan to acquire equipment for the Paediatric Ward.
The Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael Khan expressed gratitude for the gesture and pointed out that the institution, a national reference hospital, provides “quality” care and is working, assiduously, towards providing training programmes and other initiatives designed to reduce neonatal and other paediatric deaths.
Neonatal deaths
Towards that objective, he said, neonatal deaths have, in recent times, been reduced by more than 50 percent.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, the hospital was in receipt of donations from three benevolent entities, which were expected to benefit patients of its Maternity Ward and Gynaecology Department.
On that occasion it was gifted 40 jumbo bags containing basic and essential maternal items for expectant mothers and their babies, by the Rotary Club of Georgetown, in collaboration with COURTS (Guyana) Inc.
It also got a large quantity of ‘Act Now’ healthy start advisory cards for pregnant women visiting the Maternity as well as Pre-natal clinics at health centres, from Mike’s Pharmacy, and three benches to bolster the existing seating accommodation in the Gynaecology Department.
