FOR quite sometime, shoppers and vendors have been complaining about flooding in front of the New Amsterdam Municipal Market whenever it rains. According to cambio dealers who operate in the vicinity of the flood zone, it is quite unhealthy and uncomfortable to conduct business in such an area.
Ancel John, who does weekly shopping at the market, told the Guyana Chronicle, that it, is very unpleasant for him to step out of a vehicle and into several inches of water in front of the market.
“The relevant authorities really have to try and look into this situation. They are right upstairs and it’s not difficult for them to address this problem,” he stressed.
On Tuesday, heavy rains once again wreaked havoc in front of the market, where a number of persons had to pull up the length of their pants and even remove their footwear while going into and out of the facility.
Nola Blair, who is in an advanced state of pregnancy, said her feet are constantly swelling and having to traverse in water to get into the market would only do further harm to her health.
“With my current condition, I can only pray that nothing happens to me. What affects me, would affect my unborn child,” she noted.
In an invited comment, acting Town Clerk Mrs. Sharon Alexander, told this newspaper she is aware of the problem and soon an investigation will be launched to determine the main reason for the constant flooding.
“I think it goes beyond rain and the drainage facility, however, we will ascertain what steps we need to take to alleviate this recurring issue,” she stated.

TAXES
The acting Town Clerk pointed out that the M&TC is cognizant of the shortcomings within the municipality and she is urging citizens to play their part by maintaining their immediate surroundings and paying their rates and taxes.
“We are already understaffed and with the limited resources we have at our disposal, we can only do so much. It is imperative that every household honour their obligations to the municipality and pay their taxes promptly,” she emphasised.
During the heavy May/June rains, several areas in the township were flooded but owing to the ongoing drainage and irrigation exercise, the water receded quickly in most areas.
