Because of a just completed expansion programme, the beneficiaries will be able to establish links with communities and commuters along the LindenLethem road network, as well.
Consequently, the connections will enhance security of goods being transported throughout the distance.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Mr. Nigel Dharamlall, in an invited comment, told the Guyana Chronicle the initiative by GT&T is a very important one, since it would put villages, with more than 6,000 people, closer to the outer world.
BETTER INFORMED
He said, with such communication, the dissemination of information would assist the Amerindians to be better informed in real time.
They can be advised on critical issues, such as the Budget and daily news, taking democracy to the people.
Meanwhile, Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran agreed that the move by GT&T, linking North Rupununi to the central Health Ministry, would eliminate the delay in reaction to emergencies.
It would also help in the monitoring of surveillance data which was previously delivered by aircraft to the Ogle Regional Airport and transported to the Ministry for processing.
The minister recalled that questions were raised in Parliament about the malaria outbreak in Region 7(Cuynuni/Mazaruni)communities of Kamarang and Waramadong, among others, when he explained that, within 24 hours, there was response from the Ministry of Health, the Pan American Health Organisation(PAHO) and other agencies.
In the other outbreak of diarrhoea, he said this resulted in the loss of lives.
Ramsaran said North Rupununi would benefit from immediate contact information sharing and the ministry would be able to track and monitor medical problems.
