Digicel proud of Greaves’ accomplishments in USA

MENTION the word Digicel in Guyana, and readily persons would talk about BlackBerry products and BlackBerry Messenger Services (BBM) or even schools football championships. But what some don’t know is that the telecommunications service provider has been, in more ways than one, fulfilling its mandate as a corporate entity, especially in the sport sector of Guyana.
Ask the horse racing fraternity about Digicel’s one-day horse race classic, where over $6M in cash and prizes are up for grabs, or even the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, which in recent times has been receiving tremendous support towards its monthly Friday Night Fights ProAm cards.
And recently the provider has turned its attention to cycling, where national cycling ace Alanzo Greaves was enlisted as their brand manager and what better individual to choose for such a role than Greaves, who recently has been turning heads (and not his wheels alone) in the United States of America.
Greaves departed for that country hours after the completion of this year’s National Sports Council 31st Annual Independence three-stage cycle road race where he placed fourth behind Barbados’ Jamal Eastman, Geron Williams and Orville Hinds respectively.
To date, he has grabbed three first-placed finishes, one second, a fourth, 12th, 18th and 52nd spots in his events so far in that country, coupled with 11 first-placed finishes, four runner-up spots, two thirds and two fourth places on local soil, prior to his departure.
In an invited comment Digicel Sponsorship and Events Manager, Gavin Hope, said the telecommunications service provider is proud of Greaves and his accomplishments in the cycling fraternity to date.
“We first had a good look at Alanzo last October, when Digicel partnered with Roraima Bikers Club to host the Cancer Awareness Cycle meet and from then to now, he has improved significantly, especially on the local scene, while his performances in the USA speak wonders for him, since he is going up against high quality cyclists.
“We are also proud of him and his achievements, moreso since he is one of our brand managers and he is doing well, not only for himself, but his club, all of us here at Digicel and the Digicel family countrywide and to an extent, Guyana and we will continue to support him.”
Quizzed on whether Digicel will be hosting another Cancer Awareness Cycle meeting with RBC, Hope said, “Yes. Greaves is their ace rider and once we are partnering with Greaves, we are to an extent partnering with his club, so yes, we will be hosting the Cancer Awareness Cycle Meet again this year.”
