FOURTEEN schools in Region Six Berbice are expected to be on show when the third Annual Digicel-sponsored nationwide Schools Football Tournament kicks off next Friday across Guyana. According to the Regional Coordinator, Heathcliff Peters some 160 schools countrywide are expected to participate in the Under-18 tournament which will be played on a knockout basis, with matches being hosted at the Scott’s School and Skeldon grounds.
The schools who have indicated their willingness to participate this year are: New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary, Berbice High, Berbice Educational Institute, New Amsterdam Technical Institute, School of the Nations, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, Canje Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh, Corentyne Comprehensive, Manchester, Winifred Gaskin Secondary, Port Mourant Secondary, Orealla Secondary and the defending champions of the Region, Tutorial Academy.
Peters indicated that he will be working in collaboration with Ceon Bristol to ensure that the competition runs smoothly in East Berbice.
“There will be no entrance fee to any of the matches, since Digicel is not seeking financial gains from the tournament. The only thing Digicel wants from this event is publicity,” said Peters, who added that the fixtures will be drawn at Digicel’s head office in Georgetown and will be released by the end of the week.
He said snacks, transportation allowances and football bibs would be provided for each team by Digicel and the Regional winners would receive complete football kits, which they will use in the Regional playoffs.
All games will be played between Monday and Friday and the duration of each game will be 90 minutes, at the end of which if the scores remain even, a winner will be decided by penalty shootout.
The tournament was officially launched on Monday in the Savannah Suite of the Pegasus Hotel by telecommunication service provider Digicel, in collaboration with Banks DIH and its PowerAde brand. (Michael Khan)
